‘Children in Need’ 2012 summarised

As the nights draw longer and winter begins to set in, an absolute seasonal certainty rears its head – Children in Need. Last night’s BBC-supported and hosted charity event attempts to raise money for children in difficult circumstances across the U.K. The star-studded evening culminated in the raising of £26,757,446.

A marathon television slot featured a variety of musicians, actors and personalities attempting to persuade you to part with a couple of pounds. Highlights included pop stars playing roles in musicals; with a rather bizarre take on ‘Jersey Boys’ from ‘Blue’, performances from ‘Girls Aloud’ and ‘One Direction’ and even a special episode of ‘Dotor Who’. Essentially, the early evening was very much geared towards a young audience, and there was an underlying sense of juvenile behaviour throughout the programming.

This being said, the latter half of the night’s activity featured a newsreader ‘Top Gear’ challenge and quite an interesting behind the scenes look at the classic comic duo, Morcambe & Wise. Its always good to have some comic relief between heart-wrenching stories about troubled youths.

The real highlight of the night however, was a certain short businessman. Alan Sugar had a brief role in ‘Eastenders’. It’s very rare on television in today’s world of action packed dramas like ‘Homeland’ to appreciate a cheap piece of accidental comedy. As Alan Sugar left his car in ‘Albert Square’, there was a fantastic sense of a man being drastically out of his comfort zone. The fact that he’s acted his way through ‘The Apprentice’ is the only such work in his portfolio, and to see him interact with characters that’ve been in the series for years was bizarre and hilarious. Maybe not in the way the BBC had hoped though.

A good evening all round though, money raised for charity, and a couple of cheap laughs at TV personalities. Decent Friday night television.
